A guide on how to install Power BI on your desktop and mobile devices via Microsoft Store or the Power BI download center and mobile app stores.
Microsoft Power BI lets you easily connect to your data sources, visualise (or discover) what’s important, and share that with anyone or everyone you want.
Power BI is robust, easy-to-use, and user-friendly. Power BI is made up of 3 parts/elements:
- The Power BI Desktop – for building reports
- The Power BI Service – for publishing and sharing reports
- The Power BI mobile apps – for viewing reports
Download/Install Power BI Desktop
There are 2 ways to download and install Power BI Desktop:
- Download from the Microsoft Store
- Download from the Microsoft Power BI download center
Download Power BI Desktop from the Microsoft Store
Alternatively, just open the Microsoft Store on your computer, search for “power bi desktop” in the top bar, choose the app, and click “Get” to download and install it. Easy!
Benefits of getting Power BI Desktop using the Microsoft Store:
- Automatic Updates: Windows takes care of updating Power BI Desktop to the latest version. This happens monthly, saving you time.
- Efficient Updates: Instead of downloading the whole application every time, Windows only fetches the changes. This makes updates quicker and helps save on data usage.
- No Admin Privileges Needed: You can update or install Power BI Desktop without needing admin privileges. This is great if you’re using a work computer as you won’t have to bother your IT department for updates.
Download Power BI Desktop from the Download Center
- Select your language of choice, and click Download
- Be sure to read the system requirements for the application
- Select and Download the version of Power BI Desktop that matches the architecture (x86 or x64) of your Windows OS.
- Once Download is complete, Run the EXE installer and follow the setup steps.
Note: If you are not the administrator, you will need to contact your IT department to enter the necessary credentials before you can continue with the installation.
If you are downloading Power BI Desktop using the direct method, remember to return to the download center each month to download and install the latest version of the application.

With Microsoft Power BI Mobile, you can access your data anywhere, anytime. These native apps provide live, interactive, mobile access to your important business information.
